Op zaterdagavond 24 april om 20.00h treden we op in Zonnebeke, op een herdenkingsconcert ter ere van de nationale feestdag van Nieuw-Zeeland, ANZAC-day. Op ANZAC Day (25 april) worden de slachtoffers herdacht die tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog wereldwijd zijn gevallen. In Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland is dat een zeer ceremonieel gebeuren.

ANZAC staat voor het Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, de naam waaronder Australische en Nieuw-Zeelandse troepen gezamenlijk optreden in oorlogstijd. Dit was ook het geval tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog in West-Vlaanderen. In het kader van een uitwisseling (burgemeester Dirk Cardoen trok vorig jaar al naar Nieuw-Zeeland) zakken enkele hoogstaande personen uit Nieuw-Zeeland dit weekend af naar Zonnebeke.

Op dit Anzac Day herinneringsconcert speelt de Harmonie Beselare samen met Carleen Ebbs, een zangeres uit Nieuw-Zeeland, Heather Charlton, een pianiste uit Nieuw-Zeeland en Wendy Quinlan, een fluitiste uit Australië. Kaarten in Voorverkoop voor dit concert kosten 5€, kaarten aan de deur kosten 7,5€. Het concert zelf vindt plaats op het kasteeldomein in Zonnebeke. Carleen Ebbs: Carleen Ebbs is a young, award-winning lyric coloratura soprano from New Zealand who last year completed a Masters of Vocal Studies with Distinction at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London after obtaining a Masters of Music at Victoria University of Wellington. In addition to tours in New Zealand she has recently performed with Opera de Bauge, France. She has sung solos in Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Lauda Sion, Schubert’s Mass in G, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus and Messiah with choirs in New Zealand, England and Wales. She is currently one of just a few singers selected to study with Dennis O’Neill at the Cardiff International Academy of Voice. She sang at the Dawn Service, the New Zealand Service and the combined Anzac Service at the Menin Gate in 2009. Wendy Quinlan: Wendy Quinlan studied in Canberra and Switzerland. She has been principal flute for the Australian and World Youth Orchestras, Basel Sinfonietta, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra do Porto and the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders. As a soloist she has appeared with various ensembles and has made a number of recordings. She is based in Brussels and in 2007 played “Diggers’ Salute”, her own compilation of Australian period music, at the combined 90^th ANZAC Commemorations at Tyne Cot. She will play the same piece at the Dawn Service at Buttes Cemetery on Anzac Day (tomorrow). www.wendyquinlan.com

Heather Charlton: graduated in Auckland with an honours degree in piano studies and musicology, and won a scholarship to study the harpsichord and baroque chamber music at the Royal Music Conservatorium of The Hague. A scholarship from the Belgian Ministry of Arts and Culture followed, enabling further studies in baroque music at the Royal Music Conservatorium in Brussels (harpsichord) and the Royal Music Conservatorium of Antwerp (organ). Heather teaches the harpsichord and keyboard accompaniment at the Flemish Music Academy of Schaarbeek, Brussels.

De Koninklijke Harmonie Sint-Cecilia Beselare werd opgericht in 1837 en bijna 175 jaar later is de Harmonie uitgegroeid tot een vaste culturele waarde in Zonnebeke. De vereniging telt ongeveer 60 leden en heeft elk jaar enkele vaste optredens en concerten, zowel binnen Groot-Zonnebeke als daarbuiten.

De harmonie probeert geen enkele uitdaging uit de weg te gaan door geregeld aan orkestwedstrijden deel te nemen. In 2008 kon ze haar niveau bevestigen met een Eerste Prijs met onderscheiding in de uitmuntendheidafdeling op de Provinciale Orkestwedstrijd van VLAMO. Naast wedstrijden, probeert de harmonie steeds opnieuw mee te werken aan vernieuwende projecten of concerten, waar dit concert een voorbeeld van is. De Beselaarse harmonie trekt al jarenlang resoluut de kaart van de jeugd wat tot een jong, enthousiast korps heeft geleid. Sinds september 2009 wordt de harmonie geleid door Pieter Meersseman, student harmonie – en fanfaredirectie aan het conservatorium te Tilburg.
